Nothing had ever stirred him quite like the unexpected embrace of a mad woman. Caleb tingled. Not only in his lips where her sweetness had taken him like a sudden thunderstorm, but in his fingers, which ached to reach for her again.

She was a spy. Or mad. Probably both. Yet none of that stopped him from crossing to the door that had slammed with finality. Men ventured back up the stairs, but he ignored their shaking heads and pointed stares.

He tapped on the door.

“Go away, Caleb!”

The sound of his name, laced with both anger and angst, had him setting his jaw and placing a hand on the knob. “I will not, Miss Lowrey. We must speak.”

“I don’t want to.”

He turned on his heel, crossed the upper hall in three strides, and snagged the chair Sergeant Wells was about to occupy.

“What’s got you all riled up?” the sergeant said, reaching for the chair Caleb lifted.

“You’ve played enough cards for one day, don’t you think?”

The other man seemed surprised, but whatever expression marred Caleb’s face must have been enough to seam his lips.

Unless Miss Lowrey climbed out of a second story window, she wouldn’t be able to leave without first speaking to him. He needed to make it clear that while he’d not expected her kiss, he did not think her a trollop. He dropped the chair directly in front of the door, then settled down to wait.
